Heller’s father was a delivery truck – driver for a wholesale baker, who tragically died after a surgical operation in 1929 rendering a young Heller all alone with Leena. Hailed as one of the greatest novelists of American Literature, Heller crafted out satirical themes and his dark comedy could be hilarious with a downright sadness in it.
He was born to Isaac Donald Heller and Leena Heller who were poor Jewish immigrants from Russia. Joseph Heller saw the light of the world in the spring of 1923 on 1st May in Coney Island, Brooklyn. Many a conversation has been had about Catch 22 between myself and one of my dearest friend Kim’s stepfather Colin, who cites it as one of his favourite books and has put a great deal of effort into convincing me of its merit. Approximately two-thirds of the way through with no idea of what was actually happening, I traded it in for the somewhat easier read of Little Women, and have since avoided returning to it.
I first attempted to read Joseph’s Heller’s Catch 22 when in Cuba a number of years ago.
